Ngāruahine is made up of six passionate hapu located in South Taranaki. The iwi had an existing brand which it felt was slightly outdated for the present and future aspirations of the iwi, therefore engaged Favour the Brave to help with the creation of a new brand and supporting brand documents.
This was a special one for us. Not only did Ngāruahine want us to help create a new brand, but also help establish a process that would see their entire community join in on the journey to unearth a brand that best represented the proud people of Ngāruahine. To achieve this, we advised iwi members to set up a range of engagement workshops with different age groups, whereby each group was asked to communicate ideas regarding what they felt best represented their people, through text, visuals and colours. Those ideas were then transformed from their raw form, into a series of brand options for iwi to consider.
The brand is represented by a weave of six harakeke, representative of the six hapu of Ngaruahine. When woven together, they form a strong and unified iwi. The logo comprises a beautiful range of colours to represent the various individuals, views, talents and mana within Ngāruahine. Together, they form a dynamic energy and strength.
The weave also represents a korowai, wrapping around Mt Taranaki to show both the geographical location and the connection to the land and its people. The weave in the centre of the korowai is strong and established, representative of the history and present nature of Ngāruahine. The unwoven strands that extend out represent the future, and the potential yet to be achieved.
It was a rewarding process, a special process, and one that we feel very proud to have been a part of.
